How do we ensure that pupils who need extra help are identified early?

We have a proven track record in the early identification of pupils with SEND.

There are four types of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), decided by the Department for Education:

  • communication and interaction
  • cognition and learning
  • social, mental and emotional health
  • sensory or physical.

If a pupil has SEND, then their needs will fit into one or more of these categories. A school’s provision for SEND is defined as support which is additional to, or different from that which is available to all students.

We recognise that pupils make progress at different rates and not always in a steady linear pattern.  Therefore, pupils are identified as having SEND in a variety of ways, including the following:

  • liaison with previous school
  • the pupil is performing significantly below expected standards
  • concerns raised by parents/carers
  • concerns raised by the teacher
  • liaison with external agencies, e.g. a physical health diagnosis from a paediatrician.

We ensure the thorough and individualised assessment of pupils:

  • in the Early Years we assess all pupils within the first six weeks of starting school. In addition, pupils are assessed through on-going observations
  • from Year 1, pupils are assessed termly across a range of subject areas
  • we communicate and consult effectively with all stakeholders through pupil progress meetings, parent/carer meetings and target setting.

Deaf awareness training for all staff at Culloden Primary enables them to provide appropriate support to hearing impaired pupils and alerts them to the signs of temporary hearing problems.
