School councils help make decisions about things that happen in our school.
They give pupils the chance to influence decisions that affect them, making them feel their opinions are valued. Children also develop valuable skills – speaking up in meetings or to classmates helps them build public speaking and active listening skills.
Members learn about teamwork, problem-solving and taking responsibility for school initiatives. It gives pupils early experience of democracy, and working with others to achieve a goal.
It’s also beneficial for the school, as it gives teachers insight into what pupils think, helping shape policies, rules, and activities that children actually value.
