There was a fantastic buzz of energy across the school this week as teachers took part in a specialised Maths Mastery Development Day.
While the teachers were busy honing their skills to bring even more excitement to our curriculum, it was the incredible Year 2/3 pupils who truly stole the show!
Mastery in Action
The classrooms were transformed into hubs of mathematical discovery. The visitor and staff alike were impressed by how Year 3 and 4 pupils approached the challenge of short division.
Rather than just focusing on the answer, students focused on the process. We saw some truly impressive skills on display:
- Concrete Champions: Students used physical resources (like Place Value counters and Base 10) to physically “build” their division problems, making the abstract numbers come to life.
- Mathematical Language: It wasn’t just ‘solving equations’ — students were using sophisticated vocabulary like dividend, divisor, and remainder to explain their thinking.
- The Power of Talk: Our ‘Talk Partner’ system was in full swing. Pupils practiced their active listening skills, carefully considering their partner’s methods before explaining their own.
